This particular German-Russian house in Norka was owned by a wealthy family had elaborate carved gates. The window-shutters were also very elaborately carved wood. The gates when opened led to the back of the house where the stables were for the horses and carriages and cutters. The gates were kept closed at all times to keep intruders out. The window shutters were closed at night for the same reason.
